UNDERSTANDING KEY CONCEPTS
SESSION TOOL SETTINGS
EMDR therapy is not as complicated as it may seem-but it still takes practice and can at first feel like a lot to learn. It’s actually a pretty straight-forward process. Getting good at using EMDR Therapy at-home just requires a bit of patience.
If you are new to EMDR, there are some key concepts and terminology you will need to fully understand before you are completely comfortable with this program.
YOU WILL NEED TO LEARN ABOUT
You can learn more about these on the Understanding Key Terms and Concepts Page.
It is very important to read ALL of the instructions carefully and become familiar with the EMDR process. You may even want to begin with some practice sessions until you feel comfortable.
This may all seem like a lot to take in at first, but don’t worry. With just a little practice you will find it easy to go through the steps of an EMDR Session.
Your first Session might take you an extended amount of time as you teach yourself how to select your Positive Treatment Goals, work with your Addiction Triggers, and install your Ideal Emotional State.
Your second session may only require half the preparation time because you will understand these key concepts more clearly.
By the time you get to your third and fourth sessions, preparation will only take a moment and you’ll be able to jump right into the EMDR.
Eventually you won’t even need to read the instructions at all- you will know exactly what to do before your session even begins.
Please Note: Some EMDR users occasionally report experiencing strong, overwhelming, or powerful negative emotions during their session. If this happens, and you feel you need a break, you should immediately stop your session and take a few deep relaxing breaths to help you come back to the present. If the emotions brought about by EMDR are too overwhelming, you may want to turn off the EMDR Session Tool and end your session for the day.
